Friday Afternoon

Bassist William Parker works with a wide variety of players from the free jazz idiom, but not often with vocalists. The notable exception is his Raining on the Moon project, with Leena Conquest adding vocals to Parker’s words, poems, and ideas as she performs alongside his regular quartet, along with pianist Eri Yamamoto. A longtime grassroots activist and organizer, Parker has always has a political element to his music. But here the message is more direct, with Conquest’s soulful voice conjuring folk-like tales of black history and personal expression. While this project has been active since 2001—with a studio effort released in 2002 and 2007—this 2012 live set features six new compositions by Parker and the band. Highlights include a brief but uplifting “Sweet Breeze” and the slow, bluesy “For Abbey Lincoln”; the horn section of Rob Brown and Lewis Barnes and Conquest’s vivid narrative both add much to the proceedings. This is probably Parker’s most accessible work since O’Neal’s Porch.
