Countdown to Extinction (Twentieth Anniversary)

Countdown to Extinction (Twentieth Anniversary)

To celebrate its long and sometimes tortured existence, Megadeth toured South America playing the 1992 album Countdown to Extinction in its entirety and released this anniversary edition, which adds an extended look at a live set recorded in 1992 at San Francisco's Cow Palace. The album originally came out following the mainstream success of Metallica's Black Album in 1991, and Megadeth tunes such as "Symphony of Destruction," "Skin O' My Teeth," and "Architecture of Aggression" are similar in approach to that album's shorter, more concise rockers. Hardcore thrashers may have been disappointed by the restraint and subtlety, but it let the band explore more melodic and lyrical terrain, where everyone could understand the message behind "Foreclosure of a Dream." The carefully constructed maze of riffs for "Ashes in Your Mouth" makes for prime metal listening. The live concert features much from Countdown, along with highlights from previous albums and an amusing and odd version of The Sex Pistols' "Anarchy in the U.K."
