There’s a fever-dream quality to the tracks that rapper Teether and producer Kuya Neil make together. Draped in vaguely ominous beats, the Melbourne pair’s second release follows just nine months after their debut collaboration, God of Surprises. It’s a surreal DIY showcase for both Teether (also of experimental trio Too Birds) and Kuya Neil (originally from Auckland collective Fanau Spa), resembling late-night missives from a smoke-clouded bedroom. Between pinging breakbeats and a nagging refrain, the dislocated production on “Addy” echoes the lyrical theme of being unmoored from a permanent address, delivered with Teether’s trademark sleepy drawl. Likewise, his vaporous flow on “Blade” mirrors the drug dabbling described in the lyrics, while the closing “Critical Hit” cuts deeper with the repeated rhyme “Talkin’ with my brother/What it’s like to be other.” These eight striking vignettes do sound like the work of thoughtful outsiders, absorbing the disparate components of rap, dance, R&B, and even metal to create their own disorienting habitat.
