On his debut album, Canaan Smith freely mixes country and pop melodies with R&B and hip-hop grooves. It makes for a blend that sounds as natural as breathing, like when his croon effortlessly floats through banjo licks and electronic beats on the romantic invitation “Two Lane Road.” Still, Smith sounds just as convincing when he’s ripping out raw-boned country rockers such as “Hole in a Bottle” and “American Muscle,” or when he nears pop perfection on the sparkling piano-and-vocal hook of “Stuck.”
