Animal

“Take My Breath Away” turned out to be a song too big for Berlin. The huge hit broke the band commercially beyond its wildest dreams and then broke it up. Singer Terri Nunn then spent years searching for the right outlet, but in the end she reformed Berlin with musicians who wanted to be there. Throughout the '10s, music from the '80s has made a comeback among hipsters and mainstream music fans alike. But it’s taken eight years for Berlin to arrive at 2013’s Animal, which features the gorgeous ‘80s-styled synth ballad “It’s the Way” and electronically modern dance rockers like the title track and “With the Lights On,” where Nunn smoothly and sultrily leads the band through material that sounds as if Berlin had been actively playing arenas all along. The Jefferson Airplane cover “Somebody to Love” takes the ‘60s classic into the next century; yet it’s a mere footnote compared to the fresh excitement behind “Don’t Make Me Regret It” and “Blame It on the World.”
