With five different producers offering five different remixes, this extended single ends up sounding more like five different songs. The 7th Heaven Club Mix drops us off in the middle of the dance floor mid-raveup, where double-time beats, glassy synthesizers, and even rave-flavored sirens make “The One That Got Away” sound like what might've happened had Deee-Lite stuck around. Conversely, the Mixin Marc & Tony Svejda Peak Hour Club Mix isn't nearly as hyper. They let Perry’s voice remain center stage as she laments on what-ifs regarding an estranged boyfriend. Shiny studio bells and whistles adorn the tune like tinsel on a tree (and the breakdown's pretty cool as well). The R3hab Club Mix gives the song some '80s-tinged synth-pop, while Tommy Shine’s mix closes with future-disco aplomb.
