Cibelle

About Cibelle

A former model, the Sao Paulo-based singer and songwriter Cibelle ultimately embarked on a music career after meeting the Yugoslav-born DJ Suba, and was featured as a lead vocalist on his landmark electronica masterpiece, 1999's SAO PAULO CONFESSIONS. After Suba's untimely death (in a freak apartment fire), Cibelle wound up collaborating with another prominent Brazilian electronica producer, Apollo 9, on her well-received solo debut, 2003's CIBELLE. While Cibelle's vocal style is firmly rooted in the MPB (Musica Popular Brasileira) of Elis Regina as well as classic bossa nova, she has also been influenced by the example of Bjork and brings a sophisticated pop aesthetic to her electronica-tinged songs, an eclecticism reminiscent of her contemporary, Bebel Gilberto, who also recorded with the influential Suba. Cibelle's second album, the subtly textured THE SHINE OF DRIED ELECTRIC LEAVES, successfully furthered this trend in 2006.
