Nightbird

Nightbird

Like New Order on 2001’s fabulous Get Ready, the Erasure of Nightbird insists that few, if any, changes need be made to the sonic approach of their classic-era work. Indeed, save for changes in the basics of electronic music-making, the album could have taken a place in the duo’s late-’80s/early-’90s discography. Andy Bell’s soul-diva-influenced vocals remain supple and a perfect complement to Vince Clarke’s array of synthesized textures. “I’ll Be There” is an upbeat ode to a happy romance; like much great pop, it ends almost too soon. “Breathe” sits at the other end of the spectrum, as Bell’s protagonist faces the end of an affair. Both tracks acknowledge, whether explicitly or not, the time that’s passed since Erasure’s first steps. Nightbird’s maturity in the face of the ensuing challenges and changes help make it at once different and the same.
