“Nothing’s gonna be all right!” might seem like a strange lyrical hook for an emo-pop song about overcoming insecurities and negative self-talk, but in “Character Flaws” Openside seek empowerment by facing their demons and acknowledging that life isn’t always great. Led by Possum Plows (who identifies as gender non-binary and proudly utilizes their platform to wave the flag for transgender representation), the Auckland band home in on the same theme on the buoyant “Work Out,” chanting, “It’s never gonna work out,” atop bubbling bass and bright electro-funk backing. The band’s sound expands with R&B embellishments on “Tuesday,” before the chorus surges on a more familiar wave of distorted synth bass.
