The Narrows

The Narrows

First breaking out in the early ’90s with his noir folk outfit Grant Lee Buffalo, Phillips rolls into his eighth solo album having since established himself as an underground hero of Americana. The Narrows ambles from wide-screen romance (“Find My Way,” “Cry Cry”) and country laments (“Moccasin Creek,” “Holy Irons”) to jittery acoustic rockers (“Loaded Gun,” “Tennessee Rain”) with uncommon grace. Phillips’ gorgeous, sonorous voice is streaked with romance, painting him as both hurt narrator and instigator. It’s folk music for the brokenhearted.
