Everything Under the Sun

Everything Under the Sun

For the last four years Brighton based DJ Nostalgia 77, accompanied by a talented coterie of singers and musicians, has been attempting to startle the jazz world out of its creative doldrums with an innovative mix of Hip-Hop production techniques, break-beat backed live instrumentation, and some of the warmest instrumental textures to have graced a recording since, you guessed it, 1977. Any reservations the listener might have about purchasing yet another full-length display of turntable virtuosity is dispelled as soon as the buzzing acoustic bassline of “Wildflower” snakes from the speakers. Nostalgia 77 takes great pains to disguise his very modern production techniques, creating the illusion of a live performance only to startle the listener by pulling the compositions apart into trance inducing dub. The presence of vocalists Lizzy Parks and Beth Rowley on many tracks recalls the vocal pyrotechnics of a young Minnie Ripperton. Full of deep funk grooves and expansive improvisations, Everything Under The Sun provides listeners with a strikingly original re-imagining of the sound of early ‘70s soul jazz.
