Symphonic metal troupe Kamelot have always had a flair for high drama, and this fantastical concept album is no exception. “The Mission” opens The Shadow Theory with a sweeping orchestral intro before segueing into the theatrical passion play of “Phantom Divine (Shadow Empire).” “RavenLight” boasts flurries of harmonic squeals and a space-age synth-guitar solo as vocalist Tommy Karevik delivers a lofty, operatic performance. Later, Beyond the Black chanteuse Jennifer Haben joins Karevik for an elegant duet on the piano-driven ballad “In Twilight Hours.”
