About Academy of St Martin in the Fields
In 1958, violinist Neville Marriner invited a dozen of his colleagues to form an ensemble that would focus on playing Baroque music. In a cooperative spirit, the ensemble worked toward the brilliantly energetic sound and high standard of musicianship that have become its hallmarks. The ensemble gained its popularity through a series of recording contracts and performances in venues other than the church for which it was named. Over time, it expanded its size and repertoire to include smaller chamber music works and choral music. The best known of its 500+ recordings are a 1969 version of Vivaldi's Four Seasons and the soundtrack to the 1984 film Amadeus. Under the direction of Joshua Bell since 2012, the Academy continues to work with the world's most talented soloists and guest conductors and to expand its recorded legacy. ~ Rovi Staff
