Nine months after SEVENTEEN dropped SECTOR 17, their highest-charting full-length LP (it hit No. 4 on the Billboard 200), the 13-member K-pop boy band has released FML, their 10th mini album. Across six dynamic tracks, moving with ease from heavy trap to synth-pop and rock balladry, SEVENTEEN combats intrusive thoughts with relentless optimism and well-earned confidence. Take, for example, the lead single “Super,” with its plucky production and its ever-building tension, coming to a head in the chorus and shout-along post-chorus: “I love my team/I love my crew/We already made it this far.” If there is a mission statement, it’s found in the first chorus of the title track, “F*ck My Life,” where the principal songwriter/producer WOOZI and his bandmates SEUNGKWAN and VERNON sing, “From now on/Fight for my life.” Fans will recognize WOOZI and his longtime collaborator BUMZU as the hitmaking forces behind this mini album, with lyrical contributions from S.Coups, HOSHI, WONWOO, Mingyu, VERNON, and Dino, confirming what CARAT has always known to be true: The more the band contributes to the composition of their work, the better the songs get.
