About Mila J

Singer Mila J’s early career as a dancer led to membership in the groups Gyrl and Dame Four—and eventually a solo career. • When she was nine, Mila nabbed a spot in Prince’s 1991 “Diamonds and Pearls” music video. • After stints in the girl groups Gyrl (alongside sister Miyoko) and Dame Four, she signed to Motown and began work on her debut album, Split Personality, named for her ability to sing and rap. Singles like “Complete” and “Good Looking Out” were released, but the album never came out. • Mila mounted a proper comeback (after a brief stint under the name Japallonia) in 2014, releasing the singles “Smoke, Drink, Break-Up” and “My Main” in the lead-up to her EP M.I.L.A.. Several mixtapes and EPs followed, including collaborations with Jodeci and Timbaland. • Prince sampled Mila’s “Blinded” for his 2014 track “U Know.” • In 2017, after leaving Motown to go independent, Mila released her debut album, Dopamine. • Mila is the sister of Jhéne Aiko, and the two collaborated on the track “On the Way” on the deluxe edition of Aiko’s 2020 album Chilombo.
