About Hiromi

Few jazz pianists are as relentlessly inventive and stylistically mercurial as Hiromi Uehara. Whether playing solo, with an acoustic trio, or an electric quartet, she often melds post-bop, funk, pop, and classical crossover. Beginning with 2003's Another Mind, she challenged genre classifications with her technical command, dynamic feel for harmony, and complex rhythmic sensibility. Her longstanding Trio Project made its debut on Voice in 2011, fusing progressive, vanguard, and post-bop jazz with improvisation. The trio became Hiromi's primary vehicle, though she also found time to release Live in Montreal, a duet offering with composer/harpist Edmar Castañeda, in 2017. The solo recording Spectrum appeared in 2019. She issued Silver Lining Suite, a work of crossover classical and jazz for piano and string quartet, in 2021. A new electric quartet released Sonicwonderland in 2023; the quartet followed it with Out There in 2025.
