Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (The Album)

If intergalactic, shape-shifting, alien robots really did decide to settle an age-old feud on our home planet, it would make perfect sense for them to battle it out to a larger-than-life soundtrack like this one. Linkin Park get things going with the emo-tinged “New Divide.” The song paints a dark backdrop with mechanical sounding orchestration and a soaring chorus loaded with razor-honed hooks. Green Day follow it up with the moody “21 Guns,” a strolling ballad with a punchy chorus pulled from their celebrated 2009 album 21st Century Breakdown. Nickelback’s triumphant “Burn It To The Ground” would well accompany hurling a helicopter at one’s opponent; the meaty riff and sinister snarl of singer Chad Kroeger balance classic rock with a venomous post-grunge sound making for the album’s toughest tune. Staind also deliver a blistering rocker in “This Is It,” a moody and brooding song that recalls “Rooster”-era Alice In Chains. If you believe in saving the best for last, The Fallen’s remix of Cheap Trick’s take on the Transformers theme song is more than worth the wait as it sounds like the band haven’t aged a day since their epic 1978 performance at Budokan.
