The Purge

The Purge

The three members of this all-star outfit— keyboardist John Medeski (MMW, etc.), saxophonist Skerik (Garage a Trois, etc.), and drummer Adam Deitch (John Scofield, Lettuce, etc.)—are primarily known for their ability to lay down some funky jazz jams. This debut doesn’t have that overt bead on groove; instead it mixes beats with an eerie cornucopia of textures, sounds, and wandering riffs that recall Miles Davis’ more abstract electric material from the early ’70s. There are, however, chances to shake a rump on the psychedelic groove of “Count Chokulous,” the percolating Afrobeat of “Shmeeans Kuti,” and the breakbeat-driven “Scars.”
