Solo Piano II

Solo Piano II

The multitalented Jason Beck delighted longtime fans and surprised newfound ones in 2004 with Solo Piano. The rapper/producer/multi-instrumentalist sometimes known as Gonzales drew on his classical piano background for an album of pieces inspired by French impressionism and early 20th-century pop. Released eight years later, Solo Piano II offers more originals ranging tonally from elegant to exploratory to fanciful. “White Keys” opens with driving arpeggios that recall hypnotic minimalism. One of three bonus tracks, “Tarantalle” cleverly interpolates the first nine notes of Beethoven’s “Für Elise.” Bonus iTunes LP content includes film clips from the recording studio, scans of a 20-page fanzine, and handwritten notations of melodic themes for the first 14 pieces.
