Seymour Reads the Constitution!

Seymour Reads the Constitution!

In a dream, pianist Brad Mehldau heard the late Philip Seymour Hoffman reading the Constitution while a melody played. That melody became the title track here, a loping slow waltz that captures Mehldau’s venerated trio in all its soulful subtlety and restraint. The standard “Almost Like Being in Love,” by contrast, recalls the unstoppable tempos of some of Mehldau’s earliest recordings. Bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballard are in full mind-meld, whether it’s Beach Boys and Paul McCartney reinventions (“Friends,” “Great Day”) or knotty originals like “Spiral” and “Ten Tune.”
