Laura Nyro’s third album is her most intimate and intense. “The past is a blue note inside me,” she croons on the title track, summing up the mood as piano hangs shimmering in the air and she drags the song from somewhere deep inside. “Mercy On Broadway” jigsaws fractured jazz chords together and boasts a brass section that operates like New York traffic, while on “Tom Cat Goodbye” she goes after an unfaithful lover, her vocals shifting from reflective to wild in a breath.
