That's the Way It Is (Deluxe Edition)

This 2014 deluxe edition of That’s the Way It Is presents 156 tracks; the original album had just 12. This edition includes the recently expanded legacy edition and much more. Where the legacy edition includes just the complete Aug. 12, 1970, dinner show at the International Hotel in Las Vegas, this deluxe edition features six full sets recorded during the filming of Denis Sanders’ 1970 documentary of the same name—and an entire set of rehearsals with songs that didn’t make it into the final live set. Casual fans may find this overwhelming, but for anyone seduced by Elvis Presley’s obvious and overwhelming charisma, this is quite the treat. The arrangements slide into the showbiz mode of the final phase of his career, with enough backup singers to overtake a lesser singer. But Presley is so relaxed and jovial throughout that his punch lines are plentiful and in perfect relief to the magnitude of the event. His versions of The Beatles’ “Something,” Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline,” and Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” are as endearing as the songs from his early career.
