Putting his intricate, angry bars on ice, he sets an aching croon to soul songs cut with hip-hop beats and indelible hooks while celebrating fatherhood (“Grateful”), dismissing his own absent dad (“Flesh & Bone”), and absorbing hard-won lessons in self-belief (“Heartbeat”).
