The System

The System

At 17, Romain Virgo became the youngest singer to win the televised Jamaican song contest Rising Stars. The wildly popular competition is something of a Jamaican analogue to American Idol, but few Rising Stars winners have gone one to create music as artistically substantive and emotionally compelling as Virgo, whose self-titled debut evinced surprising depth and maturity. Virgo’s sophomore album, The System, is, if anything, even more accomplished. Virgo’s vocals sound more assured than ever, and he’s backed up by some of Jamaica’s most experienced producers, including Donovan Germaine, Clive Hunt, and the unfailingly innovative Shane “Jukeboxx” Brown. Additionally, Virgo’s songwriting is increasingly nuanced. The System is rich in accounts of day-to-day life in Kingston’s ghettos, including songs like “Minimum Wage” and “Another Day, Another Dollar,” which move well beyond “rough out here” clichés to offer acute dissections of the Jamaican class system. Driving and incisive.
