Pantera pretty much invented groove metal with Cowboys from Hell and its successor, Vulgar Display of Power. Of the two albums, the latter is the more fully developed. Every last second is optimized for maximum rage. Aptly titled, “F*****g Hostile” is its declaration of intent: Singer Phil Anselmo spits up half his organs while “Dimebag” Darrell unloads riffs that balance chaotic fury and mechanical precision.
