About Atom Heart

German producer Uwe Schmidt is a post-techno experimentalist whose dizzying array of pseudonyms--by some counts over 60 distinct noms de plume--is closely matched by a prodigious and supremely varied output. His best known alias, Atom Heart, was an early beacon of the '90s IDM movement. Arising from the same creative ferment as rave and hardcore techno, Schmidt soon abandoned the one-dimensional sound of typical dance floor fare--favoring instead, intricate, multi-layered sound constructions that embraced the machine end of the man-machine equation. His label, Rather Interesting, was set up in the mid-‘90s as an outlet for his increasingly heterogeneous interests, encompassing styles as varied as ambient, clicks-and-cuts house, electronic exotica, and electro jazz-fusion. By the new millennium, Schmidt had settled in Santiago, Chile in order to explore Latin music; the result was EL BAILE ALEMAN (2000), the first album under his Senor Coconut alias. A droll send up of Kraftwerk songs done in an ersatz traditional Latin style, its semi-novelty record status made it a minor hit for the producer.
