We Are All

We Are All

We Are All, the eighth album from London-based Phronesis, is a musical affirmation of the need for coexistence. The trio itself provides a model: Bassist Jasper Høiby, pianist Ivo Neame, and drummer Anton Eger are a lasting, ever-evolving unit, with an impeccably clear acoustic sound that nonetheless hints at the sonic friction and bracing pattern-based rhythm of electric jazz and electronica. There’s a pleasant symmetry in the fact that each trio member contributes two pieces, keeping the programme concise. Høiby sets a tone of high energy and complexity with “One for Us” and is more inward-looking on “Breathless.” Neame weighs in with the Douglas Adams homage “Matrix for D.A.” and the flowing, hypnotic “Emerald Horseshoe.” Eger’s “The Edge” is a marvel of interweaving parts and lilting harmony, an approach he puts to even more labyrinthine use on “The Tree Did Not Die.”
