Poetry in Music

Beginning with William Harris’ exquisite liturgical anthem for double choir “Faire Is the Heaven,” Poetry in Music is a showcase for The Sixteen, an ensemble that has been at the top of its game almost since its formation back in 1977. Still conducted by its inspiring founder, Harry Christophers, The Sixteen is something of a national institution in the UK, with a huge fanbase around the world. Here, they traverse a selection of British choral works, from Tudor gems by Weelkes and Tomkins to Herbert Howells’ heartrending funeral piece for John F. Kennedy, “Take Him, Earth for Cherishing,” and James MacMillan’s folk-infused “The Gallant Weaver.” There’s a smoothness to their sculpting of the music, an elegance to the long lines, and an inner conviction that flows easily and wears its expertise lightly.
