Taking its place alongside The Complete Concert by the Sea and the anthology of rare studio tracks Ready Take One, Nightconcert is another splendid revelation from pianist Erroll Garner’s estate and its Octave imprint. The 1964 recordings with bassist Eddie Calhoun and drummer Kelly Martin—from a midnight show at Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw–are now fully restored, with eight previously unheard tracks appended as well. The newly revealed originals include “That Amsterdam Swing” and “No More Shadows,” documenting Garner’s singular but often overlooked compositional gift. The standards are aglow with his quasi-classical virtuosity and improvising wit—idiosyncratic to the core, yet steeped in the finest swing-to-bop tradition.
