Rise

Rise

On her third studio album, Rise, Anoushka Shankar achieves an impressive, moving fusion of her sitar’s drone with a variety of tempos and outside influences. The set opens with the quiet, meditative “Prayer In Passing” before leaping into the roiling chants of “Red Sun” and “Mahadeva.” The latter, especially, reaches a stately peak of ethereal melody and thumping beats that is beguiling. Rise’s most impressive tracks come at its end, though. The lush “Voices of the Moon” builds to a speedy duet between sitar and violin that proves an ideal link to the lengthy closer “Ancient Love.” That track is suite-like and stealthy in its ever-intensifying movements — a great example of the sensual intelligence that Shankar achieves throughout.
