Pat Benatar emerged in the late 1970s as a hard rock singer with a sweet pop center. While her initial hits, “Heartbreaker,” John Mellencamp’s “I Need A Lover,” “Hit Me With Your Best Shot,” “You Better Run,” and “Treat Me Right” presented her as a tough fighting woman, Benatar was always more than a hard rock singer. And despite her band’s emphasis on tough, distorted guitars and driving new wave rhythms, she stuck to strong catchy melodies and subtly employed a wide range of styles from cabaret jazz and balladry to nightclub R&B throughout her career. This 40-track collection gives an extremely generous overview of that career, not merely settling on the early, obvious hits and album cuts but surfing further into her later albums through 1993 that satisfied her artistically if not commercially. Benatar slickened up her sound in the mid-80s with a middle of the road approach that added “Shadows of the Night,” “Love Is a Battlefield,” “We Belong,” “Sex as A Weapon,” and “Invincible” to her string of successes.
