Publisher Description
The world's oil supply is vanishing, the stock market is plummeting, and the key to saving the future seems to be a baffling historical mystery. Can the NUMA crew crack it in time? Sea of Greed is the suspenseful new NUMA Files novels from the #1 New York Times-bestselling grand master of adventure.
After an explosion in the Gulf of Mexico destroys three oil rigs trying to revive a dying field, Kurt Austin and the NUMA Special Projects Team are tapped by the President of the United States to find out what's gone wrong. The trail leads them to a brilliant billionaire in the alternative energy field. Her goal is the end of the oil age; her company has spent billions developing the worlds' most advanced fuel-cell systems. But is she an environmental hero...or a rogue genetic engineer?
The NUMA crew discovers that the oil fields are infected with bacteria that are consuming the oil before it can be pumped out of the earth--a bacteria originally lost decades ago when two submarines vanished in the Mediterranean.
With hired killers on his trail, can Kurt Austin locate a submarine that's remained hidden for more than fifty years? And even if he can, can the biological terror that's been unleashed be stopped?
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Kurt Austin and the other members of the National Underwater Marine Agency must once again save the world in bestseller Cussler's solid 16th NUMA Files novel (after The Rising Sea, also with Brown). In the present, Tessa Franco, a "wealthy and brilliant designer who'd been called a modern-day Howard Hughes," and Arat Buran, a "shadowy but important player in the oil business," rediscover a deadly bacteria that feeds on oil and forms a sludge that blocks oil wells, originally found by a secret joint Franco-Israeli research project on a Mediterranean island in 1968. Franco and Buran plan to infect most of the globe's oil wells with the organisms, which will cause oil prices to soar, whereupon Buran will corner the oil market with his own uninfected wells, and Franco will supply the planet's energy needs with a new alternative energy device she has invented. Only Austin and company can stop their nefarious plot. Cussler fans know who will win in the end, but it's always fun to watch the NUMA guys and gals implementing their clever plans.
Customer Reviews
Very nice read
Very good read from the beginning to the very end
Kurt does it again
Great story telling at its best.
Sea of Meh
I’ve enjoyed Cussler books for years but these latest ones with co-authors are really other writers using Cussler’s characters, ideas, settings, and style as their base for -their- books. This one is a decent tale but the prose and character interactions just don’t stand up. I did the unthinkable and skipped to the end because I was bored and I could see the ending from chapters away. Decent action-adventure tale. It don’t expect a true Clive Cussler read.
