About Lake Street Dive

The members of Boston-based indie-pop quartet Lake Street Dive decided to form a band while studying jazz at the New England Conservatory. ∙ Bassist/vocalist Bridget Kearney won the jazz category of the 2005 John Lennon Songwriting Contest, which funded the recording of Lake Street Dive’s 2006 debut, in this episode.... ∙ A 2012 video of the band performing a jazz-inflected version of the Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back” on a street corner went viral and boosted their reputation. ∙ T Bone Burnett invited Lake Street Dive to perform at a New York City concert celebrating the Coen Brothers’ 2013 film, Inside Llewyn Davis. ∙ The Dave Cobb-produced 2016 soul-pop album Side Pony debuted at No. 1 on three different Billboard charts. ∙ For fun, Lake Street Dive cover a different band every Halloween while dressed in costume—and their version of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” has garnered more than 1 million views. ∙ The band’s R&B-leaning 2018 full-length album, Free Yourself Up, became their first Top 10 entry on the Pop charts, reaching No. 8.
