Love & Chocolate

Founded in 2005 by the trio of Nigerian businessmen Audu Maikori, Paul Okeugo, and Yahaya Maikori, Chocolate City Music has become one of the most successful record labels in contemporary Nigerian music. From seminal artists like M.I Abaga, Ice Prince, and Brymo to subsequent chart-toppers CKay and Blaqbonez, the label’s rich catalog boasts classic rap albums, Afropop hits, and R&B gems—many of which are themed on the timeless wellspring of love. Love & Chocolate compiles these hits—including CKay’s chart-topping “love nwantiti” and the Bella-assisted “Chinekeme,” both of which brilliantly translate the artist’s Igbo language into the universality of affection. Ruby Gyang’s “Crushing,” a heart-rending song about longing, is buoyed by flurries of falsettos and a succinct hook. The pair of songs by rapper M.I Abaga—“All My Life” and “One Naira”—are anchored by a devotional hook and a multisyllabic rhyme scheme that balances dexterity and accessibility.
