Mininu Di Oru

Mininu Di Oru

Over the last two decades, Djodje has emerged as an avatar of Cape Verdean music’s playful flirting with kizomba and Afropop elements, leading to the release of a string of successful singles and albums. On his fourth LP, he taps into these cross-continental influences while tincturing them with local melodies, pointedly seeking inspiration from his roots in a bid to catapult Cape Verdean music to global popularity. Oscillating between Portuguese, Cape Verdean Creole, and English, Djodje’s lithe voice translates desire (“You”), affection (“Coma”), and admiration (“Judge Me”) with refreshing clarity. Beguiling guitar riffs undergird “Funaná Lentu,” and “Tempestade” with SYRO is a salve for tough times—but the hip-shaking rhythmicity of “Manxeda” is a potent reminder of Djodje’s ability to conjure beguiling grooves.
