It’s pretty easy to get a handle on the fun times ahead with titles like “Summer Girl,” “Let’s Go To the Beach” and “Be True To Your School (‘Til You Get Kicked Out),” but what might really surprise listeners is the quality of these catchy tunes. This Ottawa trio gets down to business in the first fifteen seconds of a song, nailing a melody that might be based on surf music, ‘50s and ‘60s pop, or garage punk of almost any stripe (OK, you won’t find any psych flavoring here). Then they assault and attack — Ian Manire’s guitar, Luke Martin’s bass and Allie Hanlon’s drums kicking up the dirt with stompin’ rhythms, fuzzed-out guitars and Manhire’s youthful rock ’n’ roll voice as fine as that of any of the power-pop outfits that inspired him. Songs like “I Can Tell” and “Popularity” harken back to the glories of new wave and early punk (the Nerves, the Real Kids), and the resounding hooks of “Let’s Go To the Beach” and “Did You Forget My Name” show the band have a clear grasp of the components of solid songcraft. Their recently reissued self-titled debut is also well worth seeking out.
