Boccherini: Cello Concertos, Stabat Mater & Quintet

Boccherini: Cello Concertos, Stabat Mater & Quintet

Here’s a wonderful one-stop glimpse into the world of Luigi Boccherini, a contemporary of Haydn, who travelled widely and assimilated many European influences. Cellist Ophélie Gaillard, directing her Pulcinella Orchestra, gives us two concertos, a symphony, chamber works (the famous and rhythmically enchanting “Retreat from Madrid” Quintet) and the spare yet powerful Stabat Mater. Gaillard is a delightful guide and a strong musical personality, whether as solo cellist or as director. The concertos burst with life while the Stabat Mater, sung with heart-rending intensity by Sandrine Piau, is superb. Boccherini is coming in from the periphery of the repertoire and this album will aid his cause enormously.
