Boccherini: Cello Concertos, Stabat Mater & Quintet

Boccherini: Cello Concertos, Stabat Mater & Quintet

Here’s a wonderful one-stop glimpse into the world of Luigi Boccherini, a contemporary of Haydn, who traveled widely and assimilated many European influences. Cellist Ophélie Gaillard, directing her Pulcinella Orchestra, gives us two concertos, a symphony, chamber works (the famous and rhythmically enchanting “Retreat from Madrid” Quintet), and the spare yet powerful Stabat Mater. Gaillard is a delightful guide and a strong musical personality, whether as solo cellist or as director. The concertos burst with life while the Stabat Mater, sung with heartrending intensity by Sandrine Piau, is superb. Boccherini is coming in from the periphery of the repertoire and this album will aid his cause enormously.
