Chicago's Hieroglyphic Being explores techno's Afrofuturist outer limits in this freeform set recorded with a surprising group of collaborators, including members of Sun Ra's Arkestra, Cecil Taylor's ensembles, and Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog. "Cybernetics Is an Old Science" balances rugged drum programming with sax skronk and unfettered modular synth, while "F**k the Ghetto / Think About Outer Space" pairs poet Rafael Sanchez's utopian verse with a stripped-down machine groove. The triumphant title track is an improv free-for-all driven by the drummer Greg Fox; it moves like a river of quicksilver.
