Mühlrad: Time

Mühlrad: Time

Time explores Swedish composer Jacob Mühlrad’s Jewish faith from different angles. A deep spirituality and sense of connection are evident from the start, beginning with the first overwhelming wave of massed voices (the magnificent Swedish Radio Choir) in “Anim Zemirot,” which celebrates King David’s love for God. The largest work here, “Time,” looks to the story of the Tower of Babel and man’s burning need to communicate, whatever the constraints of language. Meanwhile, “Kaddish” confronts the Holocaust head on. Beautifully rich harmonies speak of aching pain as well as joy and hope. Mühlrad, this album makes clear, is a major musical voice.
