SciFi Tech Talk is the podcast where we look at a movie / TV show / book / short story and the tech involved and what it says about THE FUTURE. We may go through some older material and see how much has become reality and how far we have yet to go. And new material could be looked at from the standpoint of how long we think it will take to become reality and how far from the present does it stretch the imagination.

SciFi Tech Talk #000195 - We Are Legion (We Are Bob)

Julie, Jeff, and Mike discuss the 2016 book "We Are Legion (We Are Bob)": Bob Johansson has just sold his software company and is looking forward to a life of leisure. There are places to go, books to read, and movies to watch. So it's a little unfair when he gets himself killed crossing the street.

Bob wakes up a century later to find that corpsicles have been declared to be without rights, and he is now the property of the state. He has been uploaded into computer hardware and is slated to be the controlling AI in an interstellar probe looking for habitable planets. The stakes are high: no less than the first claim to entire worlds. If he declines the honor, he'll be switched off, and they'll try again with someone else. If he accepts, he becomes a prime target. There are at least three other countries trying to get their own probes launched first, and they play dirty.

The safest place for Bob is in space, heading away from Earth at top speed. Or so he thinks. Because the universe is full of nasties, and trespassers make them mad - very mad.

I got sucked in...

This podcast is a wonderful conversation over Sci-Fi movies, TV shows, and books (or short stories). They attempt to extract the tech from them and see how it applies to modern day. Some so-called classic Sci-Fi movies actually contained very little tech. This is a podcast about vision (as in visionary) and how writers imagined our future... Fascinating listen.

Loved it all

I really have loved this show and seeing that there are only 7 reviews it makes me so sad. Because of this podcast, I've discovered so much sci-fi that I wouldn't have known about before. I love the variety that they cover, too. I looked at some of the other reviews and think its ridiculous that people are berating them for their critique's (which are just opinions anyway). Thats not even the main point of the show, which is to talk about the tech in the show/book. I think you should give it a try if you like sci-fi.

More like 3.5...

There are things I like about this podcast, but there are some things that could be improved.

I've listened to enough episodes and have heard "I haven't watched it" to know that you simply cannot provide a critique on something you haven't watched. If you've watched the film, there is no reason to simply keep referring to the IMDB page.

One of the podcasters is a self-described computer geek, but never saw TRON... really? Seriously?! C'mon!!!!

The audio quality tends to be very muddy. I imagine that the hosts communicate through Skype or something similar, but there is lots of (some free) software that can clean things up. It's irritating to only be able to make out what 1 host out of 3 is saying.

I love the concept of the show - talking about the tech of scifi media... I just really wish a little more effort was given to the pruduction, audio quality, and making sure that hosts commenting on a subject have actually seen the subject.

I want to like this podcast more and will continue to listen, but there are a couple of things that I feel need to happen before I bump my review to four or five stars.
