100: Decluttering the Emotional Closet: A Path to Resilience and Peace

Ever had a moment where a spilled coffee or a missed bus sent you into an emotional tailspin? You're not alone. On this episode, join me, Mukkove Johnson, as we delve into the world of repressed emotions and how they can disrupt our lives in unexpected ways. I'll share my own stories of emotional eruptions over seemingly trivial matters and what they've taught me about the unattended emotional needs that simmer beneath our day-to-day awareness. We’ll explore techniques to tune into these hidden signals, using physical sensations as clues, to better understand and address our innermost needs.

Our emotional closets can become as cluttered as a teenager's bedroom, but there's hope for tidying up. We discuss the parallels between physical and emotional hoarding and how to sift through years of stored feelings that may be affecting our peace of mind. From prayer and journaling to meaningful conversations, we'll cover an array of methods to begin decluttering our internal spaces. And we won't stop there; we'll also examine the strength found in taking small steps towards emotional resilience. By isolating challenges and conquering them one by one, we learn to manage our feelings effectively, setting the stage for a more harmonious and structured life.

99: Embracing Emotional Liberation: Heart Doodling with Jesus to Navigate Life's Waves

99: Embracing Emotional Liberation: Heart Doodling with Jesus to Navigate Life's Waves

Have you ever felt trapped in a cycle of suppressing your emotions, unsure of how to navigate the whirlpool of your feelings? I was there too until I discovered the healing power of 'heart doodling with Jesus.' Join me on a heartfelt journey as we discuss creating a sanctuary for our emotions, a place where we can unpack the baggage of our past and learn to approach our feelings with kindness and understanding. Through the art of heart doodling, we not only give our emotions a visual form but also find a reflective practice that invites Jesus into the conversation, helping us to better understand our responses to life’s ups and downs, and steer clear of the extremes of emotional outbursts or repression.

In the latest episode, the canvas of our discussion is painted with stories and insights from the monthly 'Heart Doodling with Jesus Workshops.' These workshops are not just about creating art; they're about building a community where individuals come together via Zoom to share, reflect, and grow. We're fostering a support network that extends to one-on-one coaching and group settings, like bible studies or family gatherings, offering a sanctuary for those looking to deepen their emotional intelligence through creativity and faith. And the dream doesn’t stop there – imagine immersing yourself in the tranquility of Alaska on a retreat centered around this transformative practice. If you're curious about bringing this innovative concept into your life or community, this episode is your invitation to embark on a journey of emotional and spiritual discovery.

98: How To Start Unpacking Repressed Emotions

98: How To Start Unpacking Repressed Emotions

If you grew up believing emotions were bad and best avoided the thought of starting to deal with them now can be overwhelming, downright scary. The good news is you don't need to do it all at once. You can go as slowly and gently as you need to.

Accepting you have emotions is a good first step. Allow them to be close in small doses. Learn to be comfortable in their presence. You don't need to fix them or resolve them. Emotions are to experience. In experiencing them you get to know them and yourself.

Making space for your child's emotions can show you what you need to make space for your own emotions.

97: Embracing Your Mistakes: The Heart Doodling Path to Self-Compassion and Growth

97: Embracing Your Mistakes: The Heart Doodling Path to Self-Compassion and Growth

How do you talk to yourself when you make a mistake?
Is it kind and encouraging? Is it helpful?
If you talked to a friend the way you talk to yourself would you still be friends?
For so many years the answer was no. No it was not kind. No it wasn’t helpful. No, I wouldn’t have any friends if I spoke to them the way I spoke to myself.
It’s ironic that as I try to write this I am debating if it is better to go find what I’ve already written on this topic or to start over. And if I start over do I write or do I talk it out first? What’s the “best” way to do this? Because I’m afraid of making a mistake…
There is no best way. The best way is to write, something, somehow. Not keep thinking about writing, not keep looking for things I think I said or where I think I covered this before. If I remember them and decide to include them that’s fine. Right now it’s time to write. Not to refine and produce a finished piece. It’s time to write. To get thoughts out of my head so I can work with them until they are ready to share with you.
One of the ways I fight this drive to always do everything in the “best” way is through Heart Doodling with Jesus. In her free workshop, Maritza Parra  teaches the concept of using a permanent marker to doodle and watercolor paint to paint your doodles. Her reasoning is to create the practice of accepting mistakes as part of the learning process. I have found this to be a powerful practice and encourage anyone trying Heart Doodling with Jesus to do the same.
Now there’s a voice inside that needs to be silenced. This voice tells me it’s bad unless it’s perfect, and it’s never perfect. This voice tells me if I don’t do well people will leave. It tells me if I cause problems they will leave. I silence that voice everytime I pick up my permanent marker and make an imperfect doodle. Everytime I keep going with a lopsided box, the head of my little Ava-Doodle wonky instead of round, I keep writing when I spelled a word wrong. I keep the message from the Lord even when the paint ran and no one but me knows what the picture was anyway.
Mistakes are okay. They are normal. They are part of learning. We practice. As we practice we will make mistakes.
Heart Doodling with Jesus gives you small, safe practice at many skills you may have missed growing up. Using the permanent marker and watercolor paints give you practice in seeing mistakes are part of learning. Mistakes don’t ruin things. I’ll talk more about that in Don’t Start Over Sit with It.

96: Walking Out Freedom From Fear

96: Walking Out Freedom From Fear

In episode 93, I shared the revelation the Lord had given me about my daughter's fear of me losing her. I laid a foundation for that fear when she was an infant and removed when the Lord revealed it.
The story I share in today's episode is another big step in the journey. In talking and listening to the Lord we discovered her fear of the dark was linked to that same core fear. More of the wall is removed in her heart.

95: Slow Down, Take the Pressure Off, Walk at God's Pace

95: Slow Down, Take the Pressure Off, Walk at God's Pace

The Lord has been impressing on my heart, slow down. It's interesting because I feel like my word for 2024 is access. But then what the Lord keeps saying is slow down, slow down, slow down. I am trying to press into that and understand what that looks like.
Part of slowing down is taking the pressure off. Taking pressure off means adjusting my expectations of where I show up and how often I show up, and that kind of thing.
I sat down to Heart Doodle with Jesus to sort out what I was feeling when it came to slowing down. Part of me was feeling discouraged and rather hopeless. Then there's the side that can see the benefit of slowing down and the appeal of slowing down. I can see and feel the contrast of my feelings.
As I listened the Lord said, “Slowing down is important. It's obedience.” That struck a chord with me. It's not just oh, do I want to or do I not? It's obedience because He's telling me to slow down. So slowing down is obedience and that's why it's important. Slowing down, on the one hand, feels good, it feels peaceful, so, yes, can I please slow down? The other side is how am I going to make this work? How am I going to get everything done? What does this look like? I don't have the details and I think it's important to realize that walking in faith and living with the Lord often has both sides. When you are walking with the Lord it doesn’t mean everything is roses, easy and peaceful. There's still an enemy. There's still your old programming that pushes you in different ways.
Obedience goes against striving. The pressure comes from my striving and my own expectations of what needs to be done or how it's supposed to look.
In February's Heart Doodling Workshop (recording is available here) the first doodle I titled, What Was. Doing a Heart Doodle with Jesus gives space to feel and identify your feelings. It is an opportunity to pay attention to the thoughts running through your head. Most importantly it is a time to hear God’s perspective on your thoughts, feelings, and circumstances.
I invite you to reach out to me. If you're in a place of “I can't even imagine slowing down, yet there's that place in my spirit where that sounds so appealing, but then that just gets crushed with everything that floods in on top of it, of all the things to do and all the people that would be upset.” reach out to me. We can have a conversation and see how I can best support you. I have options starting at $17 a month.
