Episode 10: With All Deliberate Speed
In 1957, a pivotal moment unfolded at Clinton High School in Anderson County, Tennessee. Following the landmark Brown v. Board of Education ruling by the Supreme Court, this public school would become the first in the state to integrate. Amidst a backdrop of racial tension and societal division, twelve Black students emerged as trailblazers, courageously enrolling in what was previously an all-white school. The collective determination of Jo Ann Allen, Bobby Cain, Anna Theresser Caswell, Gail Ann Epps, Minnie Ann Dickey, Ronald Gordon Hayden, William Latham, Alvah Jay McSwain, Maurice Soles, Robert Thacker, Regina Turner, and Alfred Williams redefined history. Met with vehement resistance and hostility, these students exhibited remarkable resilience. Their resolute actions, rooted in the unwavering pursuit of equality and equity and supported by many in the community, cast a glaring light on the injustices of segregation, sparking a transformative catalyst for societal change that school after school would follow throughout the state and the country.

A true representation of my “Chosen Hometown.”
Sometimes non-natives reinvigorate a passion for an area. This podcast is a case in formula. As a Memphis native who followed life, career (and love) to Middle Tennessee, sometimes I get homesick. I grew up in Memphis, Tennessee - a true “town” that became a city. I spent many years with my mother, who instilled the value of history and community pride in me. When I had to pick up my roots and find another “home,” I was so proud to find Dickson as my new chosen hometown. An area of industry that still serves the whole state with the same humbleness as as my birth town. Dickson County is an area and culture that “gets the job done.” I have been hungry to find audio literature about the true history of the land that I have come to love. I am excited that there is a podcast out there that shares the story of our community - through the lens of true history. Although verbal history is valuable, researched history cannot be ignored. I cannot wait to see what delightful disruption comes from the stories that Zach and Jasmin tell.
