Five Theatre Girls: How Five "Normal" Women Took to the National Theatre's Largest Stage

The Five Theatre Girls: five women from Doncaster, who were never professional actors but just performed on one of Great Britain's most revered stages.

The Odyssey was the National Theatre's nationwide multi-venue production to celebrate the fifth anniversary of Public Acts, a national program to create extraordinary acts of theatre and community. I read about this project and saw that some second chapter women's stories that were emerging out of the project. I needed to hear more about their stories and I'd love to share them with you!

Embracing and Letting Go of the Labels the Define Us with Alison Wearing

Embracing and Letting Go of the Labels the Define Us with Alison Wearing

For Alison Wearing, experiencing a big change at age 12, her father coming out as gay in the 1970s, led to big changes in her adult life as well.
Alison and Kristin talk about how Alison became a writer after failing English in school, how the dismissal of her second manuscript led to her taking the stage, and how letting go of the labels that define us can sometimes show us who we really are.

    From Kristin:
it is so lovely to be back with you this week. I've been feeling really sad about the irregularity of my episode releases, but I've been completely snowed under with my master's degree work. I definitely need to have my own episode soon.
There've been so many changes and I'm really proud to be doing a little bit of what I talk to my guests about every week, living my mantra of always learning. This past week, I had my first experiences as both a script supervisor, and a producer on a film set, so times have been exciting.
Today, student films. Tomorrow, Netflix. Enjoy the episode :)

Joanne's current chapter, which she's calling "the fun chapter" of her life, only happened after the ups and downs of life, love, and loss.
CW: To let you know, Joanne and Kristin speak about her experience with miscarriage, which is an important part of her story and that of her family. But she also has so much joy and life wisdom to share.

From Blowing Up Her Life to Never Been Happier, Amber James

From Blowing Up Her Life to Never Been Happier, Amber James

Despite a "having it all" life in New York City, under the surface, Amber James was anything but happy. A pandemic, two health crises, and a family death led Amber to take a risk, blow up her life, and start all over again.
"I think that's why I'm sharing my story now is I want other women to be able to tell their stories, to find their voice, take that chance on themselves and find their happy because everybody's different.
And what society tells us isn't necessarily going to make us happy."

Fun and informative

I started to listen to The Second Chapter interview with Stephanie Oram, looked at my clock, and 42 minutes had passed! As a woman who’s reinvented herself several times, I enjoy learning from others who’ve changed course in mid-life. Brave to all!

Everyone needs to hear this

As I get older I’m always battling this inner voice saying I’ve wasted too much time, wishing I’d started this or that sooner. Hearing these voices of women achieving a new dream, changing gears, it’s something I really need to hear. The important thing - she gets top level guests, and she’s a great interviewer.

Perfect female power pod!

Inspiring and such a great listen!
