    Church & Politics

Religion and politics are two topics that we are told that we should avoid discussing, but in this episode of Nathan OUTloud I am facing them both head-on.

The Season Two premiere of Nathan OUTloud comes about eight years since the last episode was released. I set aside the light and cheery tone of previous episodes to discuss the real issues being faced by the LGBTQ+ community at the hands of organized religion and the Republican Party. I share my experience of alienation and gaslighting from growing up in a Mormon and Republican family.

Links to articles and movies that I mention in the episode:

    Author and Activist Kat Kellermeyer

    Author and Activist Kat Kellermeyer

In Episode 4, I speak with Kat Kellermeyer. Kat is a nonbinary author from SLC with a background in community organizing. They were raised up in the LDS Church and stayed a member until their coming out at 24. Since then, Kat has been a vocal advocate for the queer community in Utah, especially in issues concerning the LDS Church and local queer policy.

We discuss why pronouns are so important. Find more information at mypronouns.org

We also discuss the activism that Kat continues to do in Utah to protect and support the LGBTQ community from the constant harm and influence of the LDS Church.

Kat wrote a piece for out.com titled, “The Mormon Church Is Gaslighting the LGBTQ+ Community”.

Big thanks to Kat Kellermeyer for joining me and for sharing their story.
