Episode 1.17 - Is Your Domain Name an Asset or Liability?

    This Episode

    I haven’t made a podcast in nearly 3 months! What’s going on?
Are you buying assets or liabilities?
I accidentally transferred 20 domain names to NameSilo.com

20 years ago was the best time to create an online business.  Today is the second best day.  If you’re spinning up a new website and need hosting, I personally recommend siteground.  What’s better is they’re offering 3 months Startup Hosting for only $0.99!  They offer free email, SSL certs, you can transfer in a wordpress website or create a new one with the press of a button.  They also offer auto-scaleable cloud hosting, wooCommerce hosting and more!  (you can even register domain names there).  They have an easy to use UI, secured through two-factor authentication (please set this up).  Their support staff is always helpful via liveChat when I use that.  Would you use my affiliate link? https://www.siteground.com/go/jasonofflorida

    Where has Jason been?
    I haven’t made a podcast in nearly 3 months!

I’m moving to Kentucky – relocation is taking a lot of time.
I’ve had to step up my game at work as FIVE of the developers on my team left the company.
I’m trying to read more, and listen to less “opinions” on podcasts/articles and generally adjusting to a post-COVID19 world.

Are your Domains Assets or Liabilities
I recently read “Rich Dad Poor Dad” by Robert T. Kiyosaki, and this was a tough pill for me to swallow, but he made some good points.  Let me say that I don’t think the world rotates around money, but he argues it does, and he makes some valid points to this.  My biggest take away is how he defined the differences between the rich, middle class, and poor:

Rich buy assets, Middle Class buy liabilities they think are assets, and the poor only have expenses. This is why, he states, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.
    Definitions
Asset – something that generates income
Liability – something that costs you money

Based on that definition, are your domains assets or liabilities?
How do domain names generate revenue?
    Parking
    Websites

Is it possible to have a good enough volume of sales to generate enough revenue to cover expenses consistently? I think yes, but I think this is hard to do.
    Only buy .com domain names
Only buy 1 or 2 word .com domain names (firstnamelastname domain names, domains with numbers, hand registered “made up names”
    STOP buying lottery tickets!
    Think like an investor

I’m a NameSilo Customer Now (by accident)

Meant to transfer to NamePal, but through a series of unfortunate events, I transferred names to Namesilo.

Intro – migrated my blog/domain name challenge being a time suck/still working for less-than-free. Coronavirus, kids out for the year, economic outlook. The wholesale market is ridiculous still – who buys all number domains (b/c I don’t know of a single end user who has them or uses it for a website).  “Domain investors” are judgy-jerks still.

    Good things

Initial goals of 1 podcast per month (starting in August).  I’m a bit ahead of goal – which was modest to be fair.
I’ve learned to quickly record/upload/update podcasts
I feel like I’ve gotten better at speaking
People are listening – it’s a fairly small number, but even looking at the data that indicates where people stop listening is encouraging.  Thanks to everyone for that.

    Bad things

I’m a little too formal in my approach – and I don’t think I’m being “myself” enough.  So I want to get smoother at just talking w/o all of the organization.
Guests – I haven’t had any.  That’s mainly b/c I’m convinced I’m working through the kinks.  But I need to make that leap and soon.
Lots of room to get better. Intro/music/talking points, less stuttering, being myself, being more consistent.  Most importantly, delivering information my listeners really want and deliver it in my own way (with my personality).

    Future Plans

    Guests
Maybe some better music or sound effects
A video on youtube (do people really want this?)

Episode 1.12 - The 2020 Domain Registrar Championship Bracket: First Round of the Midwest Region

Today’s episode is brought to you by my friends at siteground. Use my affiliate link: https://www.siteground.com/go/jasonofflorida
Before I get into the regional breakdown, I want talk about the new Domain Name Wholesale Exchange by Josh Reason

DNWE.com Domain Name Wholesale Exchange (DNWE.com) is a wholesale market which excludes endusers.  Founded by Josh Reason in 2020, with a recent addition of partner Joshua Schoen.  Here’s some more details:
When you register, it must be approved – unsure of the vetting process, but when you sign up you must list 2 domains that you own.
    Listings are 100% private
    Commissions lower than 15%
You can buy/sell domains.  It doesn’t look like there’s a limit on TLDs, right now there are .com, .net, .io, .co, .org, .in (1), .tv (2), and .vc (1)
All listed domains must be approved.
Once you list, your listing is good for 30 days.
The highest listing price is $20k, but lots are listed between $299 and $999.  $299 is the minimum.
Great filters by alpha-numeric, price, category and TLD

As a user, I wish it had an information page – how much commissions are, an “About” page would be a nice addition.
I’ll be posting a new article about where I interview Josh Reason about DNWE soon.
