As you probably know, 50 Campfires is dedicated to family camping. It’s our mission to get people outside - and outside more often. Traditionally the Daily Outdoor podcast is dedicated to topics that directly effect this take on the world. In early September, I had the chance to sit down with Mark Norquist, who operates a brand called Modern Carnivore. I met Mark about a year ago when both of us were attending the Outdoor Bloggers Summit in Bentonville Arkansas - and we hit it off.

I asked Mark to meet me at a local brewery outside of Minneapolis to share his views on the connections between camping, foraging, fishing - and even hunting. I had the opportunity to speak with an entrepenuer named Joel Holland. Joel is the CEO of Harvest Hosts - and digital platform that’s designed to connect RV’ers with more than 600 farms, wineries, breweries and other private locations around the country. It’s really a great idea.

On the last Saturday of June 2018, I found myself hanging out inside of a Tentsile tree tent in the heart of the redwood forest in Northern California. You’ve probably seen these tents - or have at least heard of them. I like to think of them as a grown up camping tree house. They’re super cool.

Anyways, I was fortunate enough to be hanging out with Alex, the founder of the company. Like I usually do, I took out my phone, and recorded our conversation. I found it fascinating to hear about how he came up with the idea, what camping looks like in other countries, and what’s next for his brand.
