    Introducing Bolesław

    Introducing Bolesław

Mieszko is gone and the seat of power in the early Polish state lies vacant, only to be filled by Mieszko's son Bolesław. His reign will feature some of the most daring exploits for a state that has only recently been formed, but before we get to that, let's get to know a little bit more about Bolesław, his early years, and about a friend he made named Adalbert.

    Adalbert's Demise

    Adalbert's Demise

Adalbert sets off towards Prussia where he meets some fellows who are not at all enthusiastic to see him or his companions. Not to spoil anything, but by the end of his trip I'm guessing that he wished he had brought along those guards Bolesław had lent him.
Silver lining: The Congress of Gniezno is the result of Adalbert's missionary journey, which we'll also be covering this week.

Will No One Rid Me of This Turbulent Duke?

Will No One Rid Me of This Turbulent Duke?

Bolesław mourns his old friend Emperor Otto III, tries to intervene in the succession crisis in the Empire, picks the losing side, and then ends up in a two-decade war with the Holy Roman Empire that ends with no clear winner.
It's a long slog for Bolesław, but luckily for us we get to enjoy it from the comfort of our favorite podcast app.

Informative and easy to follow

So happy to have stumbled on this podcast. I know shockingly little about my own heritage. This podcast has been wonderful to listen to. It is easy to understand, is well researched, and the host has great comedic timing. Big fan!!

Great History Lesson

It’s great to find a podcast that I can relate to, the history of my ancestors. Unfortunately the show looks to be on hiatus, sure hope it comes back.

Middling podcast poorly delivered

Cadence and speech: The presenter speaks far to fast, inexplicably whispers in numerous episodes, swallows his consonants, and slurs his way through multi syllable words. It is a chore to process his speech. Source material: At least a half of each episode is the presenter reading source material verbatim rather than synthesis of the material he has read. This is terribly boring to listen to. When he does speak in his own voice he does a fairly good job presenting his analysis but with an air of irreverence that quickly becomes tired and unprofessional. Pronunciation: The presenter fails to assign the right sounds to the right letters in Polish place names. While learning proper pronunciation is very hard - and I wouldn't expect him to learn Polish for a podcast series - you can get a basic handle on the alphabet in a day. If he hasnt done this most basic research before embarking on a sixty episode podcast it brings into question the rest of his research. (His reading of Wrocław is a particularly galling example) Picture a Polish podcaster of American history referencing “Nev Uork” and “Tsonetsitsoot” instead of New York and Connecticut - you would doubt their command of the material.
