Chaos & Culture Episode 17: Gil Scott & The Last Poets Told Us 50 Years Ago

If we’re saying two of the predecessors of rap music told us something 50 years, it means the lesson hasn’t been learned. Bouncing red balls seem to be highly effective as a distraction, while the world continues to turn. Today’s episode includes:

    • The Metaverse and moving forward with[out] “The Culture”
    • Colin Powell and all the takes
    • Netflix walkout and Geronimo’s thoughts as the resident trans person
    • Jon Gruden and standing firm in your misogyny

Friend-of-the-show Marcus K. Dowling also joins, so you already know this conversation will go into some rabbit holes and tunnels.

Chaos & Culture Episode 16: "Black Cool" Is a Hot Commodity and Then What?

Chaos & Culture Episode 16: "Black Cool" Is a Hot Commodity and Then What?

If you've paid attention to pop culture and its most prominent Black voices over the past decade, then you've probably heard this statement or similar - "We are the culture!" Translation: Black people's creativity in entertainment and style, along with our embrace of certain products and services, add a validating cool factor otherwise unattainable.

But if a massive co-sign from Black people is our greatest leverage at the bargaining table, what does this mean in the grand scheme of big business? Additionally, how does leveraging "Black Cool" contribute to the longevity of our historical narrative? Translation, in the words of Sonia Sanchez: How do it free us?

We'll also talk about the day Facebook disconnected itself from the Internet, a few easy ways non-techie people can protect themselves online, and having product diversity and redundancy for anyone using social media to conduct and promote their business. We want y'all to win out here.

Chaos & Culture Episode 15: Made for Viewers Like Who? - The Unwritten Rules of Black TV

Chaos & Culture Episode 15: Made for Viewers Like Who? - The Unwritten Rules of Black TV

Picking up where we left off on Episode 12 about the Black gatekeepers within pop culture, we dig deep into the challenges Black showrunners have in getting their ideas greenlit by producers and the expectation to write every show with a singular Black storyline.

This episode was inspired by an article recently written by Hannah Giorgis for The Atlantic titled "Not Enough Has Changed Since Sanford and Son: The Unwritten Rules of Black TV" - https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2021/10/the-unwritten-rules-of-black-tv/619816/

Geronimo also announces his new co-host, Bryant "BeMo" Brown, who's no stranger to the podcast. Think blueprints and frameworks meet the barbershop.

Chaos & Culture Episode 14: Who Made the Potato Salad? feat. KJ Kearney of Black Food Fridays

Chaos & Culture Episode 14: Who Made the Potato Salad? feat. KJ Kearney of Black Food Fridays

Black food anthropology and media is a big deal these days. Think books like Michael W. Twitty's 'The Cooking Gene' and Bryant Terry's 'Black Food' or Netflix shows like High On the Hog and Fresh, Fried and Crispy, to name a few. There are also numerous social media accounts dedicated to Black food from around the Diaspora, be it chefs of all types and foodies alike.

One account that has recently caught my eye is Black Food Fridays, an initiative that encourages everyone to support Black-owned food vendors and creatives each and every Friday or as founder KJ Kearney also puts it: "Black Food Fridays is like #TacoTuesdays but for Black people food!" The North Charleston native launched the site in April 2020, has been seen or featured on The Today Show, The Takeout, Charleston's The Post and Courier, Mic.com, and has amassed over 160,000+ followers. On this episode. we'll be talking about Black people’s present interpretation and understanding of our food and what the future holds for preserving and sharing time-honored traditions/cooking styles.

Chaos & Culture Episode 13: Cheers! Drinks at the Bar, Now and After Da 'Rona

Chaos & Culture Episode 13: Cheers! Drinks at the Bar, Now and After Da 'Rona

During the almost 18 months of varying social restrictions, a number of changes occurred among hospitality staff and patrons alike. Many within the hospitality industry were laid off, with countless employees leaving the industry altogether. People who'd normally not cook or drink at home began doing so in great numbers as well. Acosta, a CPG sales and marketing firm, found in a study conducted in May 2021 called "COVID Dining Journey: Eating at Home and Away From Home" that 92% of families will continue eating together at home at least as often – if not more often – post-pandemic. This is all despite people flocking to restaurants to have a taste of pre-pandemic life once dining restrictions at restaurants were relaxed.

But what does this mean for places operating mostly as bars? Will having a drink with friends or a date require a bar with outdoor space? Have people become home mixologists over these last 18 months? Will bar and nightclub patrons opt for house parties instead? Joining me this episode to answer all these questions and more is Nicky Marcelin -- a seasoned hospitality and food professional who wears many hats including chef, curator, and hospitality consultant.

Chaos & Culture Episode 12: Black People, Class, and the Cultural Gatekeepers Within

Chaos & Culture Episode 12: Black People, Class, and the Cultural Gatekeepers Within

An article called "Who Actually Gets to Create Black Pop Culture?" was recently penned by writer Bertrand Cooper critiquing the commercial access to and gatekeeping of our pop culture expressions by the so-called "Black Elite." This is a topic I've spent much time thinking about and decided to open the stage up to three guests instead of one this time so you can hear diversity in the opinions.

BeMo Brown returns along with another friend of the show, diversified photographer Dee Dwyer. If you've been following All The Fly Kids media since before March 2020 you should be familiar with both of these dynamic individuals, each of them having been guests within our five years of operation.
