The French Canadian pianist-composer’s new EP is a companion to his hugely popular and much-praised 2022 album aubades. To set the tone, he strips away the orchestral colours from aubades’s tracks like the seductive “amour” and “ouessant” to create gentle, meditative solo piano versions that chime with the EP’s nocturnal, sleep-inducing mood. One of the new tracks, “la chute,” was written after Blais injured his right hand, so he was forced to use just his left, bringing new colours and a vividly different feel. An album to surrender to, with a very improvised, ‘real’ feel to its homemade ambience.
